When I think about my life, I’m almost one hundred percent fairly certain that in the future I want to be involved in something TV/radio/film-wise. But the production side. I know my current degree doesn’t exactly lead straight into that sort of career, and I lack drastically any creative skills. But sometimes when I am feeling pretty creative I feel sure that I can achieve something in this domain.
Then I go to the cinema and watch Another Year and realise that nothing I will ever do, make, produce or think up will be as good as this. Pure, raw talent from the cast and in production. Mike Leigh is a rare pearl amongst the sea-weed of other producer/writer/directors in the beautifully vast ocean of film.
This is a must-see this winter, therefore you must see it.

Throw Away

Today I’m going to pick up the photographs from my two disposable cameras that I took to London/Paris with me last week. My digital camera had been on its last legs for many months until very recently when it finally decided to die on me (apparently beer-dunking isn’t the best way to treat an expensive piece of machinery) so for my trip I bought disposables.

I always think that it’s a shame that people don’t print their photos anymore. They go on facebook, which is definitely a good way to share and look at old photos, but does no one else miss passing photos around the room instead of just clicking next? Like when you get back from holiday and have family round to look at the snaps.

When film is limited, more care is taken and only the best, most meaningful photo opportunities make the cut. Obviously with digital you literally never miss a moment, but then you end up with hundreds upon hundreds of wasted shots of the floor, or of people’s heads cut off by bad aim.

What I’m trying to say is that, while digital and film both have their benefits and drawbacks, there are often just one or two really special pictures - a memory caught on disk or on film - and I’m looking forward to winding the clock back and getting my hands on some good old-fashioned negatives.

This is what I’m looking forward to about next week. Burn After Reading released on DVD tomorrow in the UK. Did anyone see it?
